Different types of steel sheet metal we carry,
what they look like, and typical uses:
Galvanized Sheet Metal:
Galvanized sheet metal is an excellent all-purpose exterior metal. Sheets are dipped in a coil galvanizing coating process. This provides excellent rust resistance. It is best to use galvanized metal panels where water collects, causing rust on otherwise unprotected metal. Galvanized metal is not well suited to be painted. When choosing a metal that is galvanized, it is not recommended it be welded (other than spot welding). Welding galvanized metal emits toxic fumes when burned.
- Coating Thickness of our stock is G90 on all thicknesses except for 28ga is G40
- Appearance is a shiny, grey, spangled pattern. These sheets typically do not come with any PVC film. They are not considered an architectural product.
- Uses include: ductwork, subgirts, hat channels, studs, cleats, trash chutes, chimney caps, counter flashing, curb caps

Hot Rolled A36 Mild Steel Sheet Metal:
Hot Rolled Mild Steel Sheets are typically heavier gauge steel or plate steel. When most people think of thicker raw steel plate, Hot Rolled Mild Steel is the product they are generally referring to. This steel plate is usually cut, bent, and then welded into structural forms. Hot rolled is used primarily for structural fabrication. After it is shop fabricated into its final form, it is often painted with a red, grey, or tan primer.
- Appearance is rough scaly black surface with heat marks that may or may not be present. These sheets do not come with PVC film.
- Uses include: Structural Clips, Channels, Angles
- Can be hot dipped galvanized post fabrication upon request.
- When structural specifications require, some thicknesses are also available in A572 Grade 50 (50ksi or gr50). Please inquire.

Cold Rolled A36 Mild Steel P&O Sheet Metal:
Cold rolled mild steel is very similar in use to Hot rolled mild steel. However, due to lack of scale and the Pickled & Oiled (P&O) surface, it has a cleaner appearance. This is the product most people associate with raw steel sheet metal, because Cold Rolled sheets are typically thinner gauge steel. Cold rolled is typically used for applications where raw steel is desired. It can be welded and clean painted easily.
- Appearance is smooth oily black surface. These sheets do not come with PVC film.
- Uses include: Corner Guards.
- Can be hot dipped galvanized post fabrication upon request.

Galvalume® Steel Sheet Metal:
Galvalume is a corrosion resistant steel sheet that is hot dipped coated with an aluminum zinc alloy. Sometimes this material is called acrylic coated Galvalume. This steel is widely used in the metal building industry for all kinds of panels, and is the base metal of most prefinsihed painted steel sheets.
- Appearance is silvery white spangled color. Available with removable PVC film to protect surface from scratches.
- Uses include: metal roofing, siding, gutters, flashings & trim

Galvannealed Sheet Metal
Galvannealed, also known as Galvanneal, Paintlock, or other variations (Paint Lock, Paintlok, Paint Lok, or Paint Grip) is an exterior grade of galvanized steel sheet that has been hot dip galvanized and annealed. This metal will easily take on a post-painted finish. It is ideal for uses where painted steel is exposed to weather. Galvannealed is suitable to be welded. However, where welding occurs, the Galvannealed coating is burned off. Galvannealed steel is a cost competitive way to gain superb adhesion and excellent corrosion resistance in one product.
- Appearance is a dull grey homogeneous non-spangled tone. These sheets typically do not come with PVC film.
- Uses include: chimney caps, open face downspout, parapet coping or caps, trim, or any other time you want to post paint.

Electrogalvanized Sheet Metal
Electrogalvanized, (also know as Bonderized), sheets are cold rolled sheets that are coated with electrolytic deposition. The surface is then phosphate treated so it can be painted. This process is typically used on products meant only for indoor use. We do not stock this material, because most of our products require exterior grade coatings. We often substitute Galvannealed for uses where electrogalvanized is specified. They are similar in price and functionality.
- Appearance is a dull grey homogeneous non-spangled tone. These sheets typically do not come with any PVC film.
- Uses include: computer cabinets, furniture, signs, light fixtures, or any other time you want to post paint a steel sheet.
Painted Kynar500® / Hylar 5000 Steel Sheet Metal:
Painted fluoropolymer PVDF coatings typically carry warranties of 20 or more years against chalking or fading. These sheets have a removable PVC film to protect the finished surface. Painted Kynar500® / Hylar 5000 steel sheets are cut and bent without cracking or scratching the surface. Sheets are finished on one side.
Uses include: metal roofing, wall panels, flashings & trim, parapet coping, wall caps

TPO Sheet Metal / PVC Sheet Metal:
This metal is a 2 ply Sheet consisting of a Galvanized base with a TPO or PVC membrane adhered. The TPO or PVC coating allows direct heat welding from TPO or PVC membrane to the metal sheet.
- Appearance is white in color, galvanized underside
- Uses include: Flashing and trim such as perimeter edge trim and scuppers where TPO or PVC membrane roofing needs to be welded to metal.
- Typically warranty requires a like manufacturer to TPO or PVC roofing system. Please inquire about manufacturer availability.
